![]() Normally, as with the other lodges on the southern rim, it sells out months in advance. Had a really great stay at the Thunderbird Lodge, having been lucky enough to a secure a room last minute. ![]() The bus service, rim, restaurants, parking, etc are all very close by and that is what you are paying for.… It’s all about location and let’s face it, if you are coming to the Grand Canyon you are there for the views and the outdoors, not hanging around in a hotel room. To put that in to perspective, following this stop off we stayed at Paris in Las Vegas that was cheaper than this rate!!! So back to the start. Breakfast? Nope, that wasn’t included in the price….and talking of the price, our rate was £210 for one night in a standard room that was not facing the rim. Parking for us was fine and easy outside the Bright Angel and there are bays around The Thunderbird, but I have no problem imagining that finding a space could prove difficult at peak times. Check in is at the hotel next door, The Bright Angel Lodge, with The Thunderbird essentially being simply an accommodation block as it doesn’t have any other facilities or functions other than accommodation rooms. As many others have noted, yes, the hotel does have a dated feel of late 70s early 80s, but it is clean and didn’t appear be rundown or in need of repairs in any way, just simply dated. We knew in advance that our room was on the side of the building facing away from the rim, so that wasn’t a problem, all we wanted was not to have to have a long walk to the rim. We stayed at The Thunderbird for one night as we wanted to experience an evening and morning at the Grand Canyon and one of the essentials for our choice of accommodation was location, which The Thunderbird most certainly delivers on, being right on the South rim and only a few footsteps away from the edge. Don't think I need to return to Grand Canyon so probably won't stay here again, but would recommend it to others wanting to take the trip.… We were on ground floor but you go up 3 steps, walk a few yards then down 3 steps then walk several yards, etc. Beware that there are lots of steps inside. Kind of gross to have to keep compost trash in your room for a couple days without someone taking it for you. Also, the housekeepers don't seem sure what to do with the compost trash when you ask. ![]() During covid there's very little food available (good coffee only at a shop outside another lodge we had to drive to) so recommend bringing in a cooler with some snacks or knowing that you'll have to go out into the town for dinner. Annoying! Of course, to stay in the park your options are limited and this lodge is literally on the edge of the canyon so location is awesome. BIG caveat - the swamp cooler turned off at night when you stopped moving around and this was super annoying as we like it cool at night and my spouse had to keep triggering it everytime we wanted it activated. Again we were pleasantly surprised and the room stayed wonderfully cool. Was very concerned about swamp coolers during 100 degree weather, as we're from CA and know how little those actually do vs traditional AC. With covid, there was plenty of parking everywhere including just outside our room and when we woke in the morning there were maybe 5 people out at the rim enjoying the view. Kind of reminded of the quality of a Hampton Inn in terms of bed/bath, but walls felt like dorm room. However, we were pleasantly surprised! The rooms were much more updated than the dark pictures make it look. Was really dreading this stay after seeing the online pictures and reading the reviews, especially since we tend to prefer high end hotels. Spent 2 nights here end of June 2020 during Covid.
